Summer Trench

I LOVE abandoned buildings.  I don’t know what it is, but whenever I pass one – I can’t help but wonder why it’s been abandoned and what spirits may be in there.  Once I was in the Pismo Beach area and there is this beautiful 3 story white colonial house on a hill that’s been abandoned.  The windows are boarded up and the paint is coming off.  After driving by it few times, I finally drove to it so I could explore.  Well, a big fence kept me out, but I asked a few locals about the story behind it.  Supposedly the owner went completely crazy and put cement in all their pipes.  Back when I was in my early 20’s, that was just the most fascinating thing ever.  It’s probably not true whatsoever but when I’m in the area, I still always look for it and stare in awe at the mystery of its past.

Well, when I went looking for a place this weekend to take some photos – I stumbled upon what appears to be a few abandoned buildings and immediately fell in love!  The sun was about to set, the buildings looked dilapidated and it turned out to be THE perfect backdrop from my Summer Trench photoshoot.

However, after walking around a bit – it looks like it’s just a strawberry and onion farm.  The buildings probably aren’t really abandoned but it’s okay…

I wore this green trench vest in my Runaway Railroad post when I first started this blog, and it is still one of my favorite pieces to throw on to give my outfit that extra edge.  My striped tank is from Madewell and I already own it in 3 colors.  It’s the perfect tank to just throw on with some jeans and run errands.  It’s long in the middle and short on the sides – the best cut in my opinion.  AND it’s on SALE!  Oh, and those pointy-toe heels?  Great Italian leather at an even better price!  Working in the shoe industry for a decade, I can tell you – there are some great brands out there who use really nice leather but assemble in China to keep the cost down.  So don’t judge the quality just because of where they’re made.

I think I’m going to be living in this outfit for the rest of the summer – if only it would stop being over 90 degrees in Southern California…..

This weekend was a hot one in Southern California.  Surprisingly, it has been awhile since my legs have seen the sun so I must apologize for how pale I am.  I have had these Alexander Wang strappy heels for awhile now and just never had a good time to wear them … UNTIL NOW!  I also have been missing a few toenails from a hiking trip back in August…. but now they’re back!!!  YAY to open toe shoes!

Since I like to be “dressy casual” most of the time – I put together this striped midi skirt with a plain cotton tank and some heels.  I used to be afraid to wear horizontal stripes in fear that it would make me seem wider.  Well, I say who cares!  Wear what you want!

The Rag&Bone tank that I am wearing is a bit long and I didn’t want to tuck it in because I was worried it might add bulk to my mid-section.  Horizontal stripes and bulk?  Not so good…I folded the tank under and knotted it on the side.  Seemed to work out!

Hope everyone had a good weekend and stayed cool!  Until next time!

I’m currently up in Oakland/Berkeley for work, but luckily I had this post ready!  As much of a scaredy cat I am about being in a place I am not familiar with (weird since I have been traveling for work for the last 3 years) and homeless people … I am starting to enjoy traveling and exploring different places.  I will definitely have to come back up with my camera to take some photos … it’s beautiful up here!!!

On to my outfit – did a photo shoot with my good friend Crystal (from Stylis Events).  She has some skills with the camera and was able to take some pretty great shots. I learned a few things about changing the settings on my camera that I didn’t know how to use before.  It was a very educational day!  We decided to go to the San Gabriel Mission and made it just in time for “magic hour.” For those of you who don’t know what that is, it’s the few hours right before sundown.  That’s when the lighting outside is just perfect!

My sweater is actually a long tunic that came with a slip underneath it to wear as a dress.  It was quite a find at the Johnny Was store since much of what they have is very boho chic.  I removed the slip and threw on some jeans for a great date night outfit.  I just got some new nude Tory Burch flats and wanted to try them out too.  You can spot them in a few of the photos. Ever since I discovered nude flats go with pretty much EVERYTHING – all black, brown, jeans, every color of the rainbow – I have been obsessed in finding nude shoes.  I scored these nude jeweled flats at the Nordstrom Rack at a pretty awesome price that I couldn’t pass up!

If there’s one thing you got from this post, it’s go out and buy yourself some nude shoes!  Oh and magic hour is the best for selfies….

Chambray & Ruby

I never thought I could wear red lipstick until I found MAC’s Ruby Woo.  It’s literally the most perfect red for an Asian skin tone. I give it a 5/5 even though this isn’t a beauty review.  It had rained the night before so I thought this would be the perfect time to wear my favorite red Madewell scarf with some red lipstick.  Boy was I wrong … it was sunny without a cloud in the sky so I had to ditch the scarf halfway through because I was sweating like crazy!

Chambrays.are.the.BEST.period.  They’re the best neutral color to throw on and add some accessories to (besides my favorite black of course!).  When I was dating a guy once, I was meeting up with him for dinner and as he walked through the door he was wearing HEAD TO TOE DENIM.  I almost died.  Okay, maybe it wasn’t ALL denim but he was wearing jeans and a jean jacket.  It was not a good look.  So when I thought that I was going to wear basically all denim (to those who think chambray IS denim), I just had the words “Canadian Tuxedo” in my head.  haha

Jeans and a Tee

You’ll probably notice that I couldn’t get away from this brick wall.  It definitely made for a great background!  If only you could see what the field in front of it looked like.  One day …. BUT I did add a picture in an alley behind Starbucks to spice it up a bit! IMG_2490 IMG_2460 IMG_2407 IMG_2313

I had planned for this post to be really causal – what I wear when I’m running errands on the weekends and just hanging out. Usually I wear my contacts, but I had to work the morning of this photoshoot and I needed a nap BAD.  I can’t sleep with my contacts on so I had to decide between suffocating my eyeballs and not napping or napping and wearing glasses for these photos.  You can guess which one I chose.  I’m pretty much blind behind those sunglasses which was great because I couldn’t be embarrassed when people walked by because I couldn’t see them!  haha

On to the outfit – I have this top in 2 colors because I love it that much.  Reason #1: It’s a v-neck and those tend to look better on me.  Reason #2: The back is longer than the front.  I discussed my love for shirts like this in my Sunday Sunset post.  Reason #3: It’s so freaking soft!  When I bought this shirt I told my sister how much I loved them and she asked me to walk right back into the store and buy her some.  She does that a lot – she should pay me to be her personal stylist.  I hope she’s reading this….
